Amazon Web Services Outage Hits Netflix, Disney+, Tinder, Delivery Services — Many More Affected
A major power outage brought down Amazon Web Services on Tuesday (December 7th), temporarily knocking out a large number of online platforms, delivery services, and apps: even the likes of giants such as Netflix, Disney+, Robinhood, and Tinder were not spared.
Amazon’s Ring security cameras, mobile banking app Chime and robot vacuum cleaner maker iRobot all reported issues according to their social media pages. The outage also brought down central apparatus used by Amazon.
Warehouse and delivery workers, along with drivers for Amazon’s Flex service, reported that they couldn’t access the Flex app or the AtoZ app, making it impossible to scan packages and see their delivery routes.
“Many services have already recovered, however we are working towards full recovery across services,” Amazon said on its status dashboard. In a further statement, spokesperson Richard Rocha confirmed Amazon’s warehouse and delivery operations were experiencing problems as a result of the AWS outage.
“Netflix, which runs nearly all of its infrastructure on AWS appears to have lost 26% of its traffic,” Doug Madory, from analytics firm Kentik, said.
Amazon said the outage was related to network devices and linked to application programming interface, or API. Downdetector.com showed more than 24,000 incidents of people reporting issues with Amazon alone — including Prime Video and other services.
According to web tool reviewing website ToolTester. Amazon has experienced 27 outages over the past 12 months related to its services. Here’s hoping things stay running as we enter the final stretch of the festive season!
